Who We Serve — A Wildly Diverse Community With a Shared Spark

When someone asks us “who is your target audience or market” at Breakwater Expeditions, the honest answer is: a lot of different people.

We’ve worked with families, individuals, teenagers and young adults, nonprofit teams, educators, therapists, coaches, and school groups—on trips that range from sea kayaking in the San Juan Islands to lodge-based retreats in the desert. And while no two journeys look the same, we’ve noticed a powerful thread that ties all our people together: a shared spark.

That spark might be curiosity. It might be a need for something different, a desire to reconnect, or a sense that it’s time for a change. Whatever brings them to us, it’s not about fitting into a mold. It’s about showing up, being real, and stepping into something meaningful.

Our Clients Are as Diverse as Our Destinations

We’ve had the honor of creating experiences for:

  • Waldorf and charter schools

  • Therapeutic and LD programs

  • Young adult transition programs

  • Hemophilia and cancer nonprofit groups

  • Yoga studios and wellness collectives

  • Life coaches, writers, and therapists

  • Families looking to reconnect

  • Teens ready for something bigger

  • Solo adults just needing space to breathe

You don’t have to be outdoorsy. You just have to be open.

What They All Have in Common

Despite the variety, our clients share a few things:

  • A desire to connect—with nature, with others, with themselves

  • A moment of transition, growth, healing, or change

  • A belief that time in wild places can shift something meaningful

They come seeking adventure, clarity, community, or just the chance to unplug and feel human again. And they leave with new stories, fresh energy, and often a renewed sense of purpose.

"It wasn’t just a trip. It was the reset I didn’t know I needed."

"You’ve impacted the trajectory of our life as a family and individuals with your skills and secret sauce."

"My daughter had SO much fun... She feels confident and strong and happy... This was a fantastic experience for my daughter, and she needed exactly that at this moment in her life."

"I didn’t realize how much I needed this experience and how much it helped me transition into college life! I rediscovered pure happiness and figured out what 'home' means to me."

"Breakwater goes beyond traditional guiding. They pull from their vast experience in education, wilderness therapy, and facilitation to design specialized trips to meet the specific needs of communities."

Why We Love This Work

Every group brings a new energy. A new reason for being here. And that’s what keeps our work so alive. Whether we’re helping a team reset, guiding a teen group through canyons, or supporting a family intensive in a cozy retreat home, we approach each experience with intention, care, and curiosity.

We believe in making nature-based experiences accessible and personal—not just for people who camp, but for people who care. Who wonder. Who hope. Who want something to change.

We love this work because it reminds us daily: people are wildly different, and wildly wonderful. And when they step outside and into something intentional? Incredible things happen.
